This February is LGBT History Month 2015, an awareness campaign to celebrate lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender lives and culture, and challenge prejudice and discrimination.
At YourGP private medical practice in Edinburgh, we support and guide many transgender people through their gender reassignment journey, and are happy to support and help raise awareness of LGBT History Month.
LGBT History Month originated in the United States in 1994 to recognise the achievements of LGBT people throughout history, and was first celebrated in Scotland in 2003.
Managed in Scotland by LGBT Youth Scotland but largely delivered by volunteers, LGBT History Month focuses on a new theme every year. In 2015, that theme is education.
LGBT Youth Scotland research shows that almost 70% of LGBT young people have experienced bullying at school.
Children with gender dysphoria, also known as transgender, transgenderism or gender identity disorder, are often bullied at school, and we have provided counselling services to many young children in Edinburgh and the Lothians.
One of the founders of YourGP, Dr Lyndsey Myskow, is an acknowledged authority in the gender dysphoria field and is the sole private practitioner in the east of Scotland dealing with its many aspects.
She works alongside Dr Sarah Kennedy, an experienced psychiatrist specialising in gender dysphoria and liaison psychiatry.
Dr Kennedy and Dr Myskow are happy to work with children with gender dysphoria, as well as friends and family to help them understand your gender identity and the process you’re going through.
If you want to help Dr Kennedy, Dr Myskow and LGBT Youth Scotland stand up against homophobia, biphobia and transphobia, why not take part in Purple Friday?
27th February, the last Friday of LGBT History Month, has been designated Purple Friday, when everyone is asked to wear purple and tweet their #purpleselfie.
At YourGP, we will certainly be making sure our staff are pretty in purple to raise awareness of LGBT History Month.
