Why breastfeeding support is so vital

Why breastfeeding support is so vital

    Posted on August 1st, 2020

The road to motherhood can be a daunting and overwhelming journey at the best of times, but with COVID-19 restrictions preventing partners from attending antenatal appointments, and friends and family unable to visit and lend a hand once the baby arrives, it is understandable that many new mothers are feeling particularly vulnerable right now.

It is therefore essential that mothers everywhere are made aware of the help and support that is available, so they can access it should they need it.

Breastfeeding support, for example, can be a vital lifeline for mothers and babies. Most mothers have heard the saying ‘breast is best’, and are aware that breastfeeding will provide their baby with the best possible start in life. Indeed, the World Health Organization recommends babies be exclusively breastfed for the first six months of their life, and that breastfeeding should continue for up to two years or beyond whilst solid foods are introduced.

However, many mothers may not know what to do or who to turn to when problems with feeding arise during that time. This lack of awareness and support could be a contributing factor to the fact the UK has one of the lowest rates of breastfeeding in the world.

    Common breastfeeding problems include:

    • Sore or cracked nipples
    • Supply issues
    • Engorgement
    • Blocked ducts and mastitis
    • Tongue tie
    • Latching issues

What is being done to help?

Every August, World Breastfeeding Week aims to shine a light on the multiple benefits of breastfeeding, and increase awareness of the need to protect and promote women’s access to skilled breastfeeding counselling so they can begin and continue to breastfeed for as long as they wish.

Benefits of breastfeeding for the baby

    • Helps to protect from infections and diseases
    • Reduces risk of diarrhoea and vomiting
    • Reduces the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS)
    • Reduces chances of the child becoming obese later in life
    • Reduces risk of cardiovascular disease in adulthood

Benefits of breastfeeding for the mother

    • Reduces risk of breast cancer
    • Reduces risk of ovarian cancer
    • Reduces risk of osteoporosis
    • Reduces risk of cardiovascular disease
    • Reduces risk of obesity
    • Can help to build a strong emotional bond between mother and baby

I needed a quick appointment as I was leaving for America. The doctor listened and allayed any concerns. It was a pleasure to talk to a doctor who wasn’t watching the clock and not paying attention to me. I left confident that if a problem arose I would be able to deal with it until I arrived home. The experience left me feeling confident and positive.
