Why you don’t have to put up with heavy periods

Why you don’t have to put up with heavy periods

      Posted on July 10th, 2026

For too long too many women have put up with heavy periods because they were led to believe it was just part and parcel of being a woman. The health experts at YourGP are here to challenge that outdated view by exploring the real reason behind heavy periods and the treatments available.

      How heavy is too heavy?

When it comes to periods, every woman’s experience is different. What one woman considers to be a heavy flow could be completely normal for another. That said, if your periods are negatively impacting your life – if having to double-up or constantly change pads and tampons is interfering with work, deterring you from exercising or restricting your socialising – it’s time to seek help.

      What causes heavy periods?

Heavy periods, also called menorrhagia, can cause anaemia and lead to fatigue, dizziness and headaches. Sometimes they can be a symptom of an underlying issue such as a hormonal imbalance, uterine fibroids, polyps, endometriosis, adenomyosis, pelvic inflammatory disease or PMOS (formerly known as PCOS). These are issues that should be investigated.

      What help is available?

When you attend an appointment at YourGP we’ll ask you a few questions to assess how much of an impact your periods are having on your life. Questions such as how long your periods typically last, how often you usually have to change your pad, tampon or cup, and whether or not you experience any other negative symptoms will determine what course of treatment will be deemed most suitable.

Treatments options include various forms of contraception and medication to help reduce the bleeding. If these treatments do not prove to be effective, we can carry out blood tests or refer you on to a specialist for further investigation.

      Speak to the health experts

If heavy periods are having a negative impact on your life and you would like to speak to a women’s health expert about managing them, book an appointment at YourGP. You can do so via our simple online booking system, by emailing reception@your.gp, or by calling us on 0131 556 2525 and we’ll be happy to arrange an appointment at a time that suits you.

After being written off by chronic pain team and their physios, and losing faith in the physio discipline, I had no expectations from Peter. I am amazed at what he has done for me. Although I still have my pain I, at last, understand what’s happening, why and how to best manage it. Peter has given me the control back. I recommend Peter to anyone I meet who needs a good physio.
