Why are we not talking about erectile dysfunction?

Why are we not talking about erectile dysfunction?

      Posted on October 25th, 2024

In recent years, we as a society have become so much more open when it comes to discussing health issues. Awareness campaigns such as Movember have worked wonders in helping to shine a light on topics that were previously strictly taboo. However, the issue of erectile dysfunction still appears to be an absolute no-go topic of conversation for too many people. Shame and embarrassment are holding people back from opening up and seeking help, despite the fact that it’s quite a common problem. In fact, around 4.3 million men in the UK, or one in five men, experience erectile dysfunction.

      What is erectile dysfunction?

Erectile dysfunction, also known as impotency, is the inability to achieve or maintain an erection sufficient for sexual performance. It is more common in men over the age of 40 and it is worth noting that many men may suffer from the occasional case of erectile dysfunction for a variety of reasons such as:

      • Stress
      • Tiredness
      • Drinking too much alcohol
      • It can also be a side effect of some medicines

However, if you’re finding the issue keeps occurring, it is important to speak to your GP as it could be a sign of an underlying health condition.

      Potential causes of erectile dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction can be caused by a variety of physiological and psychological factors including:

      • High blood pressure
      • High cholesterol
      • Heart disease
      • Diabetes
      • Anxiety
      • Depression
      • Hormonal imbalance

      Taking its toll

If left unchecked, erectile dysfunction can takes its toll on an individual’s self-esteem and mental health. It can also put a strain on relationships. But the good news is that in many cases erectile dysfunction is treatable. Depending on the underlying cause, treatment options include lifestyle changes, prescription medication and psychotherapy. Surgical implants may also be considered if the former methods are not successful.

Reduce your chances of developing erectile dysfunction

The best way to reduce your chances of developing erectile dysfunction is to maintain a healthy lifestyle. That means:

      • Eat a balanced diet
      • Exercise regularly
      • Don’t smoke
      • Drink only in moderation or cut it out completely
      • Manage your stress levels

Speak to a health expert in full confidence

Despite knowing how common erectile dysfunction is, many of you might still be reluctant to broach the topic with your friends. And that’s OK – so long as you talk about it with your GP.
