The newest member of the YourGP team, Dr Sarah Kennedy, is an experienced transgender psychiatrist specialising in gender dysphoria (transgender) and liaison psychiatry.
Born and raised in Edinburgh, Dr Kennedy trained at Dundee University. In 2000, she returned to south east Scotland to undertake her psychiatry training.
Since then, she has worked in a wide variety of mental health services across Lothian and the Scottish Borders.
“I have enjoyed a varied and rich experience working with patients of all ages throughout my career,” explains Dr Kennedy.
“I pride myself as being a good diagnostician of mental health disorder but believe terminology means little if not placed in the context of the individual and their life experiences.”
With one short career break to explore her passion for music – we’ll save that story for another blog post – Dr Kennedy is fully committed to offering a high level service.
Having worked in geriatric and community psychiatry, Dr Kennedy realised her passion lay with gender dysphoria, a condition whereby the person feels trapped within the wrong body, outwardly showing the world their wrong gender.
At YourGP, Dr Kennedy will work alongside UK recognised gender specialist Dr Lyndsey Myskow, an acknowledged authority within the field, supporting and guiding transgender clients through their reassignment journey.
Treatment for gender dysphoria takes a variety of forms, and as Dr Kennedy explains: “The transgender service at YourGP is bespoke, flexible and reactive to people’s needs.”
In addition to supporting Dr Myskow with gender dysphoria, Dr Kennedy specialises in liaison psychiatry, a rapidly expanding psychiatry.
Liaison psychiatry, otherwise known as psychological medicine or consultative psychiatry, is the branch of psychiatry that specialises in the interface between medicine and psychiatry.
The role of the liaison psychiatrist is to see patients with comorbid medical conditions at the request of the treating medical or surgical consultant, team or GP.
With Dr Kennedy on the team, YourGP now offers a complete mental health support service.
If you want to find out more about Dr Kennedy, or if you have any questions you would like to ask her, leave a comment below, or get in touch on Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn.

After being written off by chronic pain team and their physios, and losing faith in the physio discipline, I had no expectations from Peter. I am amazed at what he has done for me. Although I still have my pain I, at last, understand what’s happening, why and how to best manage it. Peter has given me the control back. I recommend Peter to anyone I meet who needs a good physio.
