The worrying rise in HIV amongst women aged 50+

The worrying rise in HIV amongst women aged 50+

      Posted on December 27th, 2025

They say with age comes wisdom, but according to the latest headlines, more women in their 50s and 60s are making some very unwise decisions when it comes to their sexual health! According to the sexual health charity Blue Sky Trust, an increasing number of women over the age of 50 are contracting HIV. And the findings are backed up by a recent report from the House of Commons Women and Equalities Committee which highlighted an alarming increase in the number of heterosexual women of all ages contracting the disease.

      Reasons for the rise

According to the Office for National Statistics, the average age for divorce in the UK is 44 for women. This ties in with the idea of women in their 50s enjoying the single life or jumping back into the dating scene. Crucially, this is around the time that most women will be going through the menopause.

For many, the idea of enjoying a healthy sex life without the risk of getting pregnant can be liberating. But of course, by focusing on the positives of not getting pregnant, many women are unfortunately overlooking the very real dangers of contracting STIs such as HIV.

And let’s not forget the role that men play in the situation too. Many post-vasectomy men may also be making the same mistakes and failing to take the necessary precautions.

      Back to basics

For anyone embarking on a new relationship, it is important to practice safe sex. Condoms have an estimated effectiveness of 90-95% against HIV transmission, but this is only if they are used correctly:

      • Always check the date on the packet
      • Store them correctly in a cool, dry place
      • Check for any signs of damage
      • Make sure it features a quality mark like a CE or UKCA mark
      • Ensure it is the correct size so that it doesn’t slip off when in use
      • Use only use water-based or silicone-based lubricants, not use oil-based lubricants with latex condoms

      Time to get tested

If you have had unprotected sex, it is important that you book in for a test. We have a range of tests available at YourGP and our highly experiences doctors will advise which one is right for you:

      • Early Detection Test (Multiplex): This is our ‘earliest’ test and can detect the HIV virus from 10 days post contact. We recommend follow up testing at 28 days. Results take 3 working days.
      • HDUO Rapid HIV Test: Detects the HIV virus from 28 days post contact. Results are available next working day.
      • The Instant Same-Day HIV Test: A pinprick of blood is put into a testing device that gives a result within a couple of minutes. The test is over 99% accurate in detecting the HIV virus from 90 days post contact.

Any of these tests can be completed at our Dundas Street practice where complete discretion is guaranteed. We offer a wide range of GP services, so no one need ever know the nature of your visit.

To secure your appointment, you can use our simple online booking system. Or you can email reception@your.gp, or call us on 0131 225 5656 and we’ll be happy to arrange an appointment at a time that suits you.

I was visiting with my son from California, US and he became ill. It was such a relief to find you and receive such expert care. He was diagnosed with bronchitis and we were given antibiotics right on the spot. My son was better in a few days and able to enjoy the remainder of our stay. Thank you very much. I highly recommend AND the location is beautiful. For any out-of-town folks it is a must-see!
