The unexpected benefits of weight loss injections

The unexpected benefits of weight loss injections

      Posted on March 19th, 2025

There’s been a huge amount of press attention recently surrounding the dramatic weight loss of certain celebrities. The likes of Oprah Winfrey, Elon Musk, Kathy Bates and Amy Schumer have all spoken openly about using weight loss injections to shift their excess pounds. But what’s much more interesting is the on-going research that is uncovering the additional unexpected benefits of these weight loss treatments. Read on as the health experts at YourGP reveal what they are.

Weight loss injections – how do they work?

Weight loss injections work by simulating natural hormones that suppress appetite, slow down digestion and promote prolonged satiety. When administered on a weekly basis and coupled with a balanced diet and regular exercise, they have been proven to be a highly effective method of treating obesity and helping patients to lose excess weight.

Reducing the risk of heart attacks and stroke

As well as aiding weight loss, new research has suggested that the appetite suppressing drug semaglutide (also known by the brand names Wegovy and Ozempic) could have a positive impact on blood sugar, blood pressure and inflammation, as well as direct effects on the heart muscle and vessels, thus reducing the risk of heart attacks and strokes.

The study examined the amount of time before patients suffered major cardiovascular events, such as heart attack or stroke, or whether they developed heart failure. After 20 weeks on the drug, 62% of patients had lost more than 5% of their bodyweight. However, what is surprising is that the risk reduction of heart attacks, stroke or heart failure was similar in patients who lost more than 5% of their bodyweight and in those who lost less than 5%, or gained weight.

Benefits to cognitive and behavioural health

This research into the cardiovascular health benefits of weight loss injections follows a separate study which revealed strong benefits to cognitive and behavioural health. The American study looked at more than two million individuals with diabetes who had used weight loss medications. The analysis found users had a decreased risk of seizures and addiction to various substances such as alcohol, cannabis, stimulants and opioids.

The findings also indicated a reduction in suicidal ideation, self-harm, bulimia and psychotic disorders such as schizophrenia, plus a decreased risk of neurological diseases such as Alzheimer’s and dementia.

      Know the risks

Despite these surprising added benefits of weight loss injections, it is important to be aware of the risks. Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and constipation. Some people have also reported hair loss. In rare cases, serious side effects can include gallbladder, kidney and pancreas problems, as well as depression.

This is why it is so important to only use weight loss injections under medical supervision. Here at YourGP, we would only recommend a course of safe and effective weight loss injections after a thorough consultation. We take a completely holistic approach to weight loss and will spend time with every patient discussing important lifestyle changes such as healthy eating choices and exercise. Plus, we make sure every patient is fully aware of what to expect from the injections before commencing a treatment plan.
