The many health benefits of cycling to work

The many health benefits of cycling to work

      Posted on August 6th, 2020

For most people, even at the best of times, the morning commute on public transport has never been much fun. And now, with the need to remember a face mask and hand sanitiser, coupled with the seemingly impossible task of trying to remain socially distanced on a busy bus or train, it is understandable that many people are hesitant about the prospect of using public transport when they return to work. So there’s never been a better time to get on your bike.

August’s Cycle to Work Day highlighted what a huge difference switching to cycling can make, not just on an individual’s physical and mental health, but also what a positive impact it can have on the world around us.

In case you’re relatively new to the saddle, here are some of the many reasons why you should consider cycling to work:

      • It is low impact: This aerobic activity will get the heart pumping without having a negative impact on the knees, compared with other forms of exercise such as jogging.
      • It is easy to do: Unlike some other sports, it doesn’t require high levels of physical skill, and like the saying goes – once you learn, you never forget!
      • It is affordable: Bikes vary hugely in price but even a top-end bicycle could still work out cheaper in the longterm than fuel top-ups for the car or daily bus or train tickets.
      • It is easy to park: Simply hop on, hop off and lock up or store at work if possible.
      • It is kind to the planet: Zero emissions means zero harm to the world around us.
      • It is fun: It’s a sure-fire way to add a sense of adventure to your journey to work!

Of course, that’s not to mention the many health benefits of cycling which include:

      • It increases cardiovascular fitness
      • It strengthens muscles and bones
      • It improves muscle flexibility and joint mobility
      • It decreases body fat levels
      • It decreases stress levels, anxiety and depression
      • It provides a valuable opportunity to enjoy fresh air and vitamin D

The facilities and patient service are second to none. The treatment I received for my eczema was innovative, holistic and most importantly highly effective. My skin has responded to the treatment I was prescribed. I am delighted with the resultant, significant reduction in my symptoms. I was impressed by the caring, sensitive and professional treatment I received. This was in stark contrast to my experience at my usual GP and at private consultations with supposedly eminent and specialist dermatologists. Thank you.
