Navigating the menopause can be exhausting and fatigue is a common symptom experienced by countless women during this time of life. Yet, for many women hoping to put their feet up at the end of a tiring day, attempts to relax can be scuppered by restless legs syndrome. The uncontrollable urge to move the legs can be hugely distracting and irritating. But thankfully help is on hand at YourGP’s specialist Menopause Clinic.
Anyone who hasn’t experienced restless legs syndrome themselves may find the symptoms difficult to comprehend. It generally involves an uncontrollable urge to move the legs and can also involve a creeping, crawling feeling. Some sufferers also experience an unpleasant throbbing or tingling sensation.
Stretching or moving the legs can provide some relief but only temporarily, and the symptoms are usually worse in the evening when the individual is sitting trying to relax or lying in bed trying to sleep.
Restless legs syndrome can be brought on by a number of different factors. Research has suggested there is a link to the brain’s dopamine system. Low iron and magnesium levels can also contribute, and certain medications such as some antidepressants and antihistamines can heighten symptoms.
One study of 5,000 menopausal women found that 18.1% of 45-54 year old women suffered from restless legs syndrome. This increased to 20.9% in the 55-64 age group.
While restless legs syndrome is not directly caused by the menopause, it is understood that the fluctuating levels of oestrogen and the sleep disturbances experienced by many menopausal women can trigger or exacerbate symptoms.
Making small changes to diet and lifestyle habits can have a positive impact for many sufferers. Reducing caffeine and alcohol consumption and cutting out smoking can help, as can increasing iron and magnesium levels through changes to diet or supplements.
Another approach which has proved successful for many patients is the use of HRT to help regulate hormone levels. To gauge if this treatment is right for you, speak to the experts at YourGP’s specialist Menopause Clinic.
During your appointment, one of our highly experienced GPs will take the time to listen to the various ways that your menopause journey is affecting you. They will then work with you to formulate a tailor-made plan, such as commencing HRT, to lessen irritating symptoms such as restless legs.
You can book your appointment using our simple online booking system, email reception@your.gp, or call us on 0131 225 5656 and we’ll be happy to arrange an appointment at a time that suits you.
