Sepsis is responsible for around 50,000 deaths in the UK every year. In fact, it kills more people than breast, bowel and prostate cancer combined. But it can be treatable if it is caught early. That is why it is so important to recognise the signs and symptoms of this life-threatening condition, because doing so could save a life. And what better time to familiarise yourself with those symptoms than September, Sepsis Awareness Month.
Sepsis occurs when the body is fighting an infection. It can stem from any type of infection, including respiratory, abdominal or urinary infections. It involves the immune system essentially going into overdrive, causing damage to tissues and organs. If it is not treated immediately, it can cause shock, organ failure and even death.

Sepsis is a medical emergency, so it is important that you call 999 immediately. Describe all the symptoms you see, provide details about any recent infections or injuries, and make it clear that you are concerned it could be sepsis.
