Sober curious? Why more people are turning teetotal

Sober curious? Why more people are turning teetotal

      Posted on July 10th, 2025

How many of you will be celebrating International Beer Day on 1st August by heading to the pub? Depending on how long you stretch those celebrations out for, you might also find yourself marking International Hangover Day on 6th August too! You never know, the experience might just convince you to consider going teetotal. It’s a choice that’s growing in popularity, especially amongst younger people and one that has multiple benefits, as the health experts at YourGP reveal…

      Raising a glass

For centuries, we’ve turned to alcohol to help relax the mind and body. Social occasions often revolve around drinking – from parties and gatherings, to weddings, birthdays, sporting events and holidays – it seems we’re never short of an excuse to raise a glass. And it’s rarely just the one glass, in fact binge drinking and drinking to excess has been seen as almost a rite of passage for young people. Until now, that is, as new research suggestions young people are leading the way in terms of saying no to alcohol.

Why are more people turning teetotal?

According to DrinkAware, the proportion of non-drinkers in Scotland increased from 14% to 20% between 2011 and 2023. Overall, it’s the younger generation, Gen Z, that are more likely to cut out alcohol. Reasons include:

      • A more health conscious approach to life – greater interest in eating well and exercising, for example
      • Greater awareness of the effect of alcohol on physical health
      • Greater understanding of mental health and the impact alcohol can have on it
      • Rising popularity of alternative ways of socialising, such as going to the gym, attending classes or workshops, or simply socialising online
      • Increased concerns about lack of control and greater awareness of incidents of drink spiking
      • Increased concerns about drunken behaviour being captured and shared on social media
      • Rising cost of living and reduction in the purchasing of non-essential items such as alcohol
      • Greater availability of alcohol-free drink alternatives

      The negative effects of alcohol

For the sober curious amongst you, there are many reasons to go all in and ditch alcohol completely. In terms of physical health, we know that drinking increases the risk of high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke. It can also affect the liver and pancreas, and increase the risk of several cancers including liver, breast, mouth, throat and colorectal cancers. It can also weaken the immune system, impact fertility and affect cognitive function.

With regards to mental health, we know it can greatly exacerbate conditions such as depression and anxiety, and alcohol misuse has been shown to be a significant risk factor for suicidal thoughts and behaviours.

Halfway round the world from home (Australia) and really needed a GP. YourGP provided excellent prompt service. Made a call at 10.15am and was seen by a very caring doctor at 11.30am. Great ambassadors for Edinburgh.
