Is your diet affecting your sex life?

Is your diet affecting your sex life?

Having trouble achieving or maintaining an erection on the odd occasion can happen for a number of reasons – from stress and tiredness, to having had one too many drinks. But if you find it’s happening on a regular basis, it’s best to see your GP. That’s because erectile dysfunction could be an indicator of a bigger issue.

Erectile dysfunction – more common than you think

Erectile dysfunction, also known as impotency, is a fairly common occurrence, particularly in men over the age of 40. In fact, according to The Urology Foundation, round 4.3 million men in the UK are estimated to be suffering from the condition.

      Potential causes

Whilst stress, tiredness and hormone issues can be contributing factors to erectile dysfunction, so too can your heart health. High blood pressure, high cholesterol and cardiovascular disease can all cause erectile dysfunction. Therefore, whilst the odd episode of erectile dysfunction is usually nothing to worry about, if it continues it is important to speak to your GP so they can monitor your heart health.

The link between the kitchen and the bedroom

The best way to reduce your chances of developing erectile dysfunction is to maintain a healthy lifestyle. A large part of that is eating a balanced diet.

Many studies indicate that following a Mediterranean diet that includes plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, whole grains and fish could help to lower the risk of erectile dysfunction. When combined with exercise, it can help to increase blood flow and help lower blood pressure.

Foods that are rich in L-arginine, such as poultry, red meat, dairy products, nuts and leafy greens can also help to open up the blood vessels.

Studies have also shown a link between erectile dysfunction and vitamin D deficiency, so you may wish to consider taking a supplement. And of course it’s best to avoid eating processed food that is high in fat, salt and sugar.

Other ways to reduce your risk

Combining a healthy diet with other positive lifestyle changes can help to reduce your risk further. Exercise regularly – aim for 150 minutes of moderate or 75 minutes of vigorous activity each week. Don’t smoke, and drink only in moderation or, even better, cut it out completely. Learn to manage your stress levels and aim to get around 7 – 9 hours of quality sleep per night.

      Speak up

If left unchecked, erectile dysfunction can takes its toll on an individual’s self-esteem and mental health. It can also put a strain on relationships. But the good news is that in many cases, erectile dysfunction is treatable.

After being written off by chronic pain team and their physios, and losing faith in the physio discipline, I had no expectations from Peter. I am amazed at what he has done for me. Although I still have my pain I, at last, understand what’s happening, why and how to best manage it. Peter has given me the control back. I recommend Peter to anyone I meet who needs a good physio.
