Toilet habits, bowel movements, flatulence – why is it that when we hear these words and phrases we start to feel uncomfortable? There are many sufferers of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) who feel they can’t talk openly about their symptoms because of embarrassment. As a result, many withdraw and isolate themselves – too scared to participate in a fulfilling social life or take on particular work responsibilities for fear of being judged or ridiculed.
This month, we’re trying to tackle the shame, anxiety and embarrassment surrounding symptoms of IBS. Afterall, up to one third of the UK population experiences them. If you’ve got questions about the condition, IBS Awareness Month is the time to educate yourself.
IBS is a common condition that affects the digestive system. Sufferers can be affected in different ways but the most common symptoms include:
It’s impossible to pinpoint one sole cause of IBS. Instead, it is likely to be the result of a complex combination of factors including:
IBS is a lifetime condition with sadly no cure. However, medication, changes to diet and lifestyle factors can help people manage their symptoms. It can be a bit of a trial and error process – what works for some might not work as well for others. But a good place to start is to keep a diary of your symptoms, noting when symptoms flare-up and ease off.
Suggested changes to diet include cutting down on alcohol and fizzy drinks, cutting down on fatty and processed foods, and eating meals at a regular time. Lifestyle changes include exercising regularly, making sure you’re getting enough sleep, and finding ways to manage stress levels.
If IBS is having a negative impact on your everyday life, speak to a health expert at YourGP. We’re here to lend a sympathetic ear and to work with you to find solutions to ease your symptoms. You can book an appointment using our simple online booking system, email reception@your.gp, or call us on 0131 381 0322 and we’ll be happy to arrange an appointment at a time that suits you.
Halfway round the world from home (Australia) and really needed a GP. YourGP provided excellent prompt service. Made a call at 10.15am and was seen by a very caring doctor at 11.30am. Great ambassadors for Edinburgh.
