Don’t make this the summer of syphilis

Don’t make this the summer of syphilis

      Posted on July 23rd, 2025

The Edinburgh Festival is in full swing, the city’s nightclubs are open until 5am and everyone, residents and tourists alike, is revelling in the party atmosphere. But whilst it’s a great time to meet new people and enjoy some world class comedy, it’s important to remember that gambling with your sexual health is no joke, especially as syphilis is on the rise.

      A rising problem

It’s easy to get swept up in the festival atmosphere, and tempting to let go of your inhibitions and “live a little”, but it’s important not to let your guard down when it comes to protecting your health.

The latest data from the UK Health Security Agency shows a 4.6% increase in the number of people being diagnosed with syphilis, compared to last year. Symptoms include a sore at the site of infection, and this can be followed by a rash. If left untreated, it can lead to serious damage to the heart, brain, nerves, eyes and other organs.

Of course, not all STIs have symptoms. In fact, many do not present any signs at all, yet can still lead to major problems such as infertility. It is therefore vital that you attend a sexual health screening if you have had unprotected sex, as this is the only way to know for sure if you have contracted anything.

      Reduce your risk

You can reduce your risk of contracting STIs by practising safe sex. When used correctly, condoms offer one of the most effective methods of protection. However, it is important to note that they do not offer protection against STIs such as syphilis.

It is therefore essential that you limit your number of sexual partners and attend sexual health screenings on a regular basis to reduce the risk of unknowingly passing on any STIs.

The facilities and patient service are second to none. The treatment I received for my eczema was innovative, holistic and most importantly highly effective. My skin has responded to the treatment I was prescribed. I am delighted with the resultant, significant reduction in my symptoms. I was impressed by the caring, sensitive and professional treatment I received. This was in stark contrast to my experience at my usual GP and at private consultations with supposedly eminent and specialist dermatologists. Thank you.
