This month men across the world are being encouraged to grow a mo’ to help to change the face of men’s health. Because far too many men are dying far too young.
That’s what Movember is all about – raising awareness and raising funds to support vital projects that focus on issues such as mental health, suicide prevention, prostate cancer and testicular cancer.
Over the past 20 years, Movember efforts have funded more than 1,250 men’s health projects across 23 countries. But there is still plenty more work to be done.
If you’re wondering why it’s so important to shine a light on men’s mental health, suicide prevention, prostate cancer and testicular cancer, just take a look at the latest UK figures:
By 2030, Movember has committed to:
It aims to do this by:
As well as getting your friends and family to sponsor you to let your facial hair grow freely throughout November, there is another way you can lend your support to this important campaign, and it’s quite simply to talk.
Mental health: Many men are reluctant to discuss their mental health for fear of being judged. But this attitude that they should “man up and carry on” is highly damaging. Issues such as anxiety and depression can have a huge impact on a person’s quality of life, and can affect everything from careers to relationships. Talking about feelings as they arise is the best way to prevent them from becoming overwhelming. And talking openly about your own mental health is the best way to encourage others to follow your lead and reach out for help, if and when they need it.
Suicide prevention: Across the world, one man dies by suicide every minute of every day. Being aware of the warning signs and stepping in to provide support could make all the difference to a loved one who may be contemplating suicide. If you’ve noticed a loved one has become withdrawn, is displaying risky or reckless behaviour, seems agitated or is having extreme mood swings, and is increasingly turning to alcohol or drugs, it’s essential that you talk to them and seek professional help immediately if they are having thoughts of suicide.
Prostate cancer: If you are experiencing any abnormal urinary symptoms such as increased frequency or urgency, it’s time to speak up. Similarly, if it feels like you haven’t fully emptied your bladder when you urinate, or you experience any pain, discomfort or notice blood in your urine, it’s important you talk to your GP right away.
Testicular cancer: First and foremost, it is essential that you know what’s normal for you, so you can tell your doctor about any changes as soon as they occur. Early detection will give you the best chance of fighting testicular cancer, should that be the case. And of course if it’s not testicular cancer, your mind can be put at ease as soon as possible. So, if you notice any pain in either testicle, swelling, a lump, a change in size, feel or appearance, talk to your GP immediately.
Whatever is weighing on your mind, whether it’s a physical symptom or an overwhelming negative feeling that you just can’t shake off – talk to the team at YourGP.

My medical was conducted in detail and I had a thorough check. The doctor listened to me and gave me some extra tips that are helpful. Most impressed.
