The three C’s of suicide prevention

The three C’s of suicide prevention

      Posted on August 18th, 2026

More than 7,000 deaths are officially registered as suicide every year in the UK. Each one of those statistics was a person who leaves behind friends and family who will likely carry unimaginable pain, confusion, anger and sorrow for the rest of their lives.

To tackle the issue, the team at YourGP are throwing our full support behind World Suicide Prevention Day on 10th September. The theme this year is “Changing the Narrative on Suicide” which aims to move people away from the silence and stigma that has surrounded the issue of suicide for far too long, and to steer conversations towards openness and compassionate support.

      Why things need to change

According to Zero Suicide Alliance, Scotland has the highest suicide rate in the UK, with 15 suicides per 100,000. It’s a figure that we all need to work together to tackle. Recognising signs of depression, reaching out to those who may be struggling with thoughts of suicide, and talking more openly about mental health can all help.

Whilst suicide is three times more common among men than among women, and suicide rates are highest amongst people aged between 45 and 54, it is important to remember that poor mental health and suicidal thoughts can affect anyone.

The warning signs to look out for

Whilst many people experiencing poor mental health may be good at bottling up and hiding their true emotions, you may notice some changes in their behaviour that could indicate a need to step in and help them:

      • Distancing themselves from others
      • Mentioning feeling overwhelmed or worthless
      • Displaying a consistently low mood or extreme mood swings
      • Changes to appetite and weight
      • Disrupted sleep
      • Experiencing difficulty carrying out their normal, everyday tasks
      • Neglecting their personal hygiene
      • Engaging in risky or reckless behaviour
      • Misusing alcohol or drugs to cope with emotions

      The three C’s

Have you noticed a change in behaviour in a loved one? Worried they might be experiencing suicidal thoughts but not sure how to approach the person? Many people are reluctant to address suicidal thoughts for fear that they might make the situation worse. However, research shows asking someone directly about their suicidal thoughts can actually reduce the risk. To give you the confidence to address the issue, remember the three C’s:

      1. Connection: Reduce their feelings of isolation by reaching out to them and listening without judgment. Ensure they feel understood and valued.
      2. Collaboration: Talk about the things that are causing them stress, worry and upset, and work together to find solutions.
      3. Choice: Give them a sense of control and empower them to move forward in a positive way.

      Reach out for help

There are a number of charities who can provide help and support to anyone experiencing suicidal thoughts:

      • Samaritans: Phone 116 123, available 24 hours a day
      • Mind: Phone 0300 123 3393, Monday to Friday between 9am and 6pm, or text 86463

      • The Silver Line: Phone 0800 470 80 90, available 24 hours a day

The facilities and patient service are second to none. The treatment I received for my eczema was innovative, holistic and most importantly highly effective. My skin has responded to the treatment I was prescribed. I am delighted with the resultant, significant reduction in my symptoms. I was impressed by the caring, sensitive and professional treatment I received. This was in stark contrast to my experience at my usual GP and at private consultations with supposedly eminent and specialist dermatologists. Thank you.
