Fitness trackers are big business. In 2026, the UK fitness tracker industry was estimated to be worth £3.6 billion, with around 1 in 3 of us wearing smartwatches and health monitoring devices every day.
Thanks to advances in wearable tech from the likes of Garmin, Fitbit and Apple, we can now monitor our daily movement, heart rate and sleep quality, and dial into those stats any time and any place. Used correctly, they can be a great way to get a snapshot of your health. But for some people, they can soon become a source of unnecessary anxiety. Read on as the health experts at YourGP dig in to the pros and cons of fitness trackers.
Data
From calorie intake and workout duration, to heart rate variability (HRV) and V02 max status, the data these smartwatches collect throughout the day can enable you to make informed decisions about your fitness goals and the best ways to work towards them.
Motivation
So many people start their health and fitness journey with the best intentions, but motivation can soon start to wane. Being encouraged to maintain a “streak” of activities, or doing just a few more steps to reach a daily goal can be a great way to stay motivated and stick to the new routine.
Accountability
A clear, visual record of your health and fitness progress can be a great way to stay accountable. By showing you exactly what you’ve achieved so far and what you still need to do to continue on that positive trajectory is a great way to stay on track to your targets.
Accomplishment
The sense of achievement that comes from completing a recommended workout, balancing your HRV and upping your V02 max can provide a much-needed confidence boost and encourage you to push your fitness further.
Lack of flexibility
Most fitness trackers rely on AI to make recommendations, and in some cases the lack of flexibility in these fitness plans can do more harm than good. Because they don’t account for the ups and downs of real life, there is the possibility that it could encourage you to ignore your body’s natural cues and push you beyond your physical limits which could lead to burnout and injury.
Inaccurate data
The accuracy of some of the data collected via this technology is very much dependent on the user – how loose or tight the smartwatch is, how clean the is, and whether or not the user leaves it on or takes it off at night.
Data fixation
For some individuals, constantly checking data before, during and after every workout can suck the joy out of exercise.
Unnecessary pressure
Pressure to maintain a workout streak or achieve a specific fitness level can create a level of stress and anxiety. Couple this with feelings of shame and disappointment when they fitness goals are missed, and trackers have the potential to negatively impact a person’s mental health.
As with so many things in life, the key to getting the most out of your fitness tracker is to take a balanced approach. Listen to your body and be flexible. If life’s ups and downs mean you need to rein things in a bit on the fitness front, don’t beat yourself up about it. Set realistic targets and celebrate the wins along the way.

I needed a quick appointment as I was leaving for America. The doctor listened and allayed any concerns. It was a pleasure to talk to a doctor who wasn’t watching the clock and not paying attention to me. I left confident that if a problem arose I would be able to deal with it until I arrived home. The experience left me feeling confident and positive.
