According to the latest data from the Scottish Government, nearly one-third of adults in Scotland are living with obesity. This is the highest level ever recorded by the Scottish Health Survey. But things may be about to change. Weight loss injections have soared in popularity and an estimated 1.5million people in the UK are now using them. Studies show they can be highly effective at helping people to lose excess weight, but what happens after you stop taking them…?
Not only can obesity adversely affect a person’s everyday life – their movement and energy levels – it can also have serious long-term consequences. Obesity increases the risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes and some types of cancer.
So what is most exciting for health experts is the growing evidence that weight loss injections are not only affective at helping people to lose excess weight, they are also helping to reduce high blood pressure and reduce the risk of heart attacks and strokes.
Weight loss injections work by helping to reduce appetite. However, it is important to understand that they do not provide a permanent solution. In one study conducted by Wegovy, patients regained around two-thirds of their original weight once they came off the injections. A study by Mounjaro found similar results, and people put most of the weight back on within just three to six months of stopping the injections.
Studies are still ongoing, but it is thought that the majority of patients will experience rapid weight gain after stopping the injections because the regions of the brain relating to appetite are still dysregulated. Weight loss injections only mask this dysregulation, so when the injections are stopped, the “food noise” and increased appetite returns.
The key thing to remember is that long-term weight management is not about a short-term fix. It’s about sustainable behavioural change that includes eating healthily and exercising regularly.
This is why the team here at YourGP believe weight loss injections should only be used as part of a wider approach, and those looking to lose weight should only use these injections under the guidance of a trusted medical professional.
