      Struggling with a low libido?

      Struggling with a low libido?

      Posted on January 15th, 2025

In the mood for love this Valentine’s Day, or just not feeling it? We all have differing sex drives, but if you’re finding your libido is lower than normal and it’s causing you some concern, speak to the health experts at YourGP. Not just because we believe everyone deserves a happy and healthy sex life, but because a low libido can sometimes be a sign of an underlying health issue.

      A lack of libido

It’s natural for a person’s libido to decrease with age, however this is usually a subtle and gradual process that happens over the years. A more obvious drop in libido could be related to a range of things including:

      • Relationship problems
      • Tiredness
      • Stress
      • Mental health issues
      • Physical conditions such as erectile dysfunction or vaginal dryness
      • Changes in hormones relating to pregnancy, breastfeeding or the menopause
      • Medication
      • Excessive alcohol or drug use

A decline in libido can also be related to medical conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity or an underactive thyroid. And that’s why it’s so important to speak to a health professional if you’re experiencing any noticeable changes.

Ways to boost your sex drive

If you’re experiencing a temporary drop in libido and you’re keen to get things back on track, try these simple lifestyle changes:

      • Make time to connect with your partner. No matter how busy your schedule is, make sure you prioritise a little quality time together doing something you both love.
      • Eat a healthy, balanced diet.
      • Exercise regularly.
      • Get into a regular sleep routine and aim for eight hours of quality sleep per night to reduce tiredness.
      • Find ways to reduce stress – whether that’s adopting practical coping strategies such as yoga and meditation, or completely reassessing your work / life balance.

      Ask for help

If things don’t improve after putting these lifestyle suggestions into practise, book an appointment at YourGP. We can carry out a range of blood and hormone tests to check for any underlying health issues. We can also provide a range of effective treatment options, including testosterone injections and HRT medication.

If the idea of discussing your sex life with your doctor makes you feel uncomfortable, don’t worry – the team at YourGP are here to put your mind at ease and make sure you feel as relaxed as possible. Everything you share with us will be regarded in the strictest confidence. Our highly experienced medical professionals have likely heard it all before, so there’s nothing to feel embarrassed about. We’re here to help you, so book an appointment using our simple online booking system, email reception@your.gp, or call us on 0131 381 0322.

I needed a quick appointment as I was leaving for America. The doctor listened and allayed any concerns. It was a pleasure to talk to a doctor who wasn’t watching the clock and not paying attention to me. I left confident that if a problem arose I would be able to deal with it until I arrived home. The experience left me feeling confident and positive.
