Aesthetic treatments – why it’s always best to choose a medical professional

Aesthetic treatments - why it’s always best to choose a medical professional

      Posted on January 23rd, 2024

For those of you contemplating a ‘tweakment’ to help keep lines and wrinkles at bay – choose your cosmetic practitioner wisely! According to recent research by University College London, 68% of UK cosmetic practitioners that are administering aesthetic injectables are not actually medically trained doctors. Read on as we explain why this is a serious issue…

A booming (and effectively unregulated!) industry

According to University College London’s findings, “The UK injectables market is predicted to reach a value of £11.7 billion by 2026, but to date is effectively unregulated”.

At the moment, little is known about the background qualifications, training and experience levels of many people administering aesthetic treatments such as anti-wrinkle injections and dermal fillers, and this is a serious concern. For this reason, we at YourGP believe greater regulation is needed.

      Know the risks

In order for patients to get the best results – in terms of safety and aesthetics – we at YourGP believe it is absolutely essential that every cosmetic practitioner has:

      1. In-depth knowledge of the muscular and anatomical structure of the area being treated
      2. A thorough understanding of the chemicals involved
      3. Awareness of any possible reactions and side effects

If the cosmetic practitioner is lacking in any of these areas, there is a very real possibility that patients could be put at risk of injuries such as burns, scars or facial paralysis.

      What sets YourGP apart

YourGP offers a range of medical aesthetic treatments, including injectables such as anti-wrinkle treatments and dermal fillers. Before proceeding with any treatment, every patient is expected to have a complimentary consultation. This consultation takes the form of an in-depth chat with the doctor who will explain how each treatment works, assess your suitability, and answer any questions you might have.

For added reassurance, here are the various ways YourGP is committed to raising the bar when it comes to aesthetic treatments:

      • All aesthetic non-surgical cosmetic procedures at YourGP are carried out by fully qualified, regulated medical professionals.
      • YourGP is regulated by Healthcare Improvement Scotland – the regulator for independent healthcare services across Scotland.
      • YourGP is also registered with the Joint Council of Cosmetic Practitioners (JCCP).
      • We pride ourselves on our ethical and medical based service with all the governance that is assured from the General Medical Council.
      • One of our practising doctors holds a VTCT level 7 diploma in clinical aesthetic injectable treatments.
      • We are committed to using only genuine licenced products sourced from legitimate suppliers.
      • We ensure all our equipment is safe and clean.
      • We fully understand the importance of patient consent and their understanding of possible outcomes.

When Lyn booked me with Dr McFarlane and said ‘what he doesn’t know about sexual health isn’t worth knowing’ she was right. Thorough assessment, quick test and immediate treatment all in a relaxed, professional manner – Excellent!
