10 simple steps to maximise your anti-wrinkle treatment results

10 simple steps to maximise your anti-wrinkle treatment results

      Posted on March 19th, 2025

According to the latest government figures, an estimated 900,000 anti-wrinkle injections are carried out in the UK each year. However, given the lack of regulation, experiences can vary widely. What makes YourGP different is our commitment to upholding the highest standards to ensure every patient enjoys the safest experience and gets the best results. One way we help our patients maximise their treatment results is by providing comprehensive aftercare advice. From what not to do in the first few hours following treatment, to long-term lifestyle changes that can help prolong the positive effects – read on for some help and guidance from the aesthetic experts at YourGP.

What to expect immediately after your anti-wrinkle treatment

Anti-wrinkle treatments are quick and non-invasive, which means you can return to your usual activities with minimal downtime. However, if you want to get the very best results, we recommend you follow these 10 simple steps:

      1. Monitor results: You may experience a little redness or swelling at the injection sites immediately following treatment. However, this is normal and it will typically subside within just a few hours. Keep an eye on it and if it lasts any longer than expected, or you notice anything unusual, contact your practitioner immediately.
      2. Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water to hydrate your body to help with the healing process.
      3. Don’t touch: Avoid touching or rubbing the treated area to prevent infection and to allow the treatment to settle.
      4. Stay upright: Ideally, stay upright for a few hours following treatment, again to give the treatment time to settle.
      5. Avoid makeup: Do not apply makeup to the treated area for at least 4 hours.
      6. Stay cool: Avoid extreme heat such as saunas and hot tubs for at least 4 hours.
      7. Cut out the chemicals: When washing your face, be sure to use lukewarm water and a mild cleanser. Avoiding rubbing, harsh chemicals and exfoliants.
      8. Skip the rigorous exercise: Refrain from strenuous exercise for at least 24 hours.
      9. Avoid alcohol: Avoid alcoholic drinks for 24 hours as this can thin the blood and increase the risk of bruising.
      10. Don’t sleep on your front: Sleep on your back for the first two nights to allow the treatment to settle.

Ways to help your treatment last longer

The effects of an anti-wrinkle treatment typically last 3-4 months, however this can vary depending on the placement of the injections, the dosage and the individual response – everybody is different. Certain lifestyle factors can accelerate the breakdown of the anti-wrinkle solution, so if you want to maximise your treatment results, follow these 5 steps:

      1. Wear sun protection every day: Even on a grey day in Scotland, the sun’s UV rays can still cause significant damage to your skin and can speed up the breakdown of the anti-wrinkle solution, so apply a quality SPF every day.
      2. Hydrate your skin: Aim to drink at least 8 glasses a day to keep your skin healthy and hydrated.
      3. Reduce your stress levels: Stress can manifest itself through muscle tension, which has the potential to affect your treated area, so if you feel your stress levels rising, take steps to lower them such as breathwork, meditation or movement.
      4. Take a zinc supplement: Some studies suggest that zinc may help to prolong the effects of anti-wrinkle treatments.
      5. Quit smoking: Smoking has been proven to accelerate ageing of the skin and reduce the effectiveness of anti-wrinkle treatments, so if you’re a smoker seek help to quit as soon as possible.
