Winter workplace hazards – is your business prepared?

Winter workplace hazards – is your business prepared?

      Posted on October 23rd, 2025

UK winters are getting wilder – more frequent storms, heavy rainfall, gale force winds, hail and snow – and this extreme weather has the potential to cause serious disruption to your business. It could also pose a risk to the health and safety of your workforce. So as the days grow colder, the Occupational Health experts at YourGP are here to highlight the winter workplace hazards your team needs to be aware of, and the best ways to navigate them this season.

Potential risks and how to address them

      • Icy access routes: Carparks and pathways may become slippy with the accumulation of wet leaves or icy when the temperature drops. Ensure all access routes are cleared and gritted.
      • Poor lighting: The reduced daylight hours may mean employees are arriving and leaving work in the dark. Ensure there is adequate outdoor lighting to help prevent trips and falls.
      • Falling debris: High winds can dislodge loose tiles and masonry. Ensure regular maintenance checks are carried out inside and outside the building to identify and rectify any potential issues.
      • Slippy floors: Entrance ways can become slippy as staff in muddy wet shoes pass in and out. Make sure these areas are swept and dried regularly, and visible “wet floor” notices are used to highlight the risk.
      • Heating issues: Burst pipes and boiler problems are common in winter. Whilst there is no specific UK law for a minimum working temperature, guidance suggests 16°C for most indoor work, or 13°C for work involving a lot of physical effort. Ensure all heating appliances are serviced regularly, isolate any outdoor water pipes when the temperature drops, and maintain a consistently warm temperature inside.
      • Commuting in extreme weather: Travelling to and from work can be dangerous when the roads are icy or when it is especially windy and there is a risk of fallen trees and debris on the roads. Be aware of weather warnings and be flexible and open to remote working, if this is an option.
      • Power cuts: If you have to close your workplace due to a power cut, ensure you have clear lines of communication with all staff to keep them updated.

      Be proactive this winter

Winter is coming, so now is the time to be proactive and put plans in place to ensure your business can continue to operate smoothly, whatever the weather. Carry out risk assessments, complete all the relevant safety checks, and communicate any contingency plans with staff, so you can head into winter with the peace of mind that comes from knowing you’re prepared for anything.

I had been at this practice since late 2018. The staff have been nothing but amazing! The care given here has to be the best care I’ve ever received at any practice. Very polite, greeted with a smile and always made sure you were comfortable.

The response times are extremely quick, always on that day or early next morning, pointing you into the right direction. Even if they were unable to assist, they would always make sure you knew where to go and what to do.

Your appointments are always accommodated to your needs, some imes I was unable to make my routine appointments in person so they would happily offer a Skype call which made things easier as I live a few hours away, but was always happy to make the trip when I could as it was always a pleasant experience.

I cannot thank this practice enough for the help that they gave me, I now feel confident and comfortable with myself and I would definitely recommend their services!
