Suicidal thoughts are more common than you think

Suicidal thoughts are more common than you think

      Posted on August 29th, 2024

1 in 5 of us will struggle with suicidal thoughts in our lifetime. Those figures might come as a surprise to many of you reading this – suicidal thoughts are much more common than you might have realised. If you haven’t personally experienced them, the chances are that you’ll have a friend, family member, neighbour or colleague who has. For that reason, the Occupational Health team at YourGP are calling on employers everywhere to focus on this important issue on 10th September – World Suicide Prevention Day.

      The shocking statistics

The following statistics don’t make for easy reading, but they give a clear indication of the scale of the problem and why we as a society need to do more to tackle the issue:

      • According to Zero Suicide Alliance, Scotland has the highest suicide rate in the UK, with 15 suicides per 100,000.
      • UK Government figures show suicide is three times more common among men than among women.
      • These government figures also indicate that suicide rates are highest amongst people aged between 45 and 54.

      It’s time to open up

Many people find talking about their thoughts, feelings and general mental health extremely difficult. But we all need to get better at speaking openly if we are to stand a chance of breaking the stigma of suicidal thoughts and helping those in need.

      How to help

The Samaritans charity lists four ways you can play your part.

      1. Watch out for changes in behaviour that could indicate someone is having suicidal thoughts: Everyone reacts to life’s challenges in different ways, but a few things to look out for in the workplace include someone distancing themselves from others, mentioning feeling overwhelmed or worthless, displaying a consistently low mood, and experiencing difficulty carrying out their normal tasks.
      2. If you’re concerned about someone, reach out and talk to them: Ask them how they’re feeling and reassure them that you will listen without judgement.
      3. Get help: If an employee opens up and reveals they are experiencing suicidal thoughts, it is important that they get help right away. One way to do this is to call the specialist charity, Samaritans. You can contact them for free, 24/7 on 116 123. If you suspect they are in crisis and they have tried to harm themselves, stay with them and call 999 immediately.
      4. Break the stigma: The stigma attached to suicidal thoughts can prevent people from getting the support they so desperately need. A poll from Samaritans revealed that 71% of UK adults are unaware of just how many people experience suicidal thoughts at some point in their lives. In response, they advise that everyone plays their part to help break the stigma to enable more people to open up.

I was warmly greeted by staff with genuine smiles. The staff made me feel very comfortable and engaged me in conversation about several topics which made waiting pass very pleasantly. I noticed they were proactive in making each person who arrived feel welcome, including the courier.
