Hay fever, Kenalog and COVID-19: Why this summer is different

Hay fever, Kenalog and COVID-19: Why this summer is different

    Posted on June 10th, 2020

Whilst the recent hot weather and rainfall was no doubt welcomed by gardeners, it was a whole different story for hay fever sufferers. The reason being, these are the ideal conditions for grass to flourish, and of the estimated 18 million people in the UK who suffer from hay fever, grass pollen affects around 90% of them. With the press reporting on an impending ‘pollen bomb’ due to hit the UK, now is the time many of our patients would ordinarily be booking in for their annual Kenalog injection.

However, this summer will be a little different because YourGP has taken the decision to suspend our prescribing of Kenalog this year for hay fever. YourGP’s Medical Director, Dr Myskow, explains why…

“Kenalog is a high dose steroid injection. Steroids are immunosuppressant drugs so anyone taking these is less able to fight off infections, and that includes COVID-19.

“Anyone receiving a Kenalog injection will immediately be classed as high risk and therefore require shielding. Shielding means staying at least 2 metres away from other people, including those living in the same household. The government advice is that they should stay at home as much as possible. They can go out once a day to exercise but they should not enter shops. Instead, groceries and medication should be delivered to their door.

“Kenalog is an effective way to manage the symptoms of severe hay fever. However, so too is staying indoors as much as possible – and of course doing so without the added risk of being made more vulnerable to COVID-19 by the immunosuppressant Kenalog injection makes the most sense.

“It is for this reason, we felt it best to suspend our prescribing of Kenalog this year for hay fever.”

YourGP is, however, open for most other services, with face-to-face appointments available at the practice, as well as remote consultations, either via video or telephone. To book an appointment, email reception@your.gp and we will be happy to assist.

I had been at this practice since late 2018. The staff have been nothing but amazing! The care given here has to be the best care I’ve ever received at any practice. Very polite, greeted with a smile and always made sure you were comfortable.

The response times are extremely quick, always on that day or early next morning, pointing you into the right direction. Even if they were unable to assist, they would always make sure you knew where to go and what to do.

Your appointments are always accommodated to your needs, some imes I was unable to make my routine appointments in person so they would happily offer a Skype call which made things easier as I live a few hours away, but was always happy to make the trip when I could as it was always a pleasant experience.

I cannot thank this practice enough for the help that they gave me, I now feel confident and comfortable with myself and I would definitely recommend their services!
